KATONG / JOO CHIAT / EAST COAST NEIGHBOURHOOD

The east of Singapore charms with its laid-back attitude and iconic buildings preserved from the pre-war era. Experience breezy surroundings dotted with colonial architecture, reminiscent of this district’s use as a weekend retreat by wealthy residents in the 19th century. The short distance to East Coast Park, Singapore’s largest park with 15 kilometres of seaside parkland, promises a whole host of exciting sports and outdoor activities.

LOCAL CULTURE

Known as the district of the Peranakans (early Chinese traders who married Malay women and settled in the region), the fascinating mix of these two rich cultures comes alive in the neighbourhood. The Eurasian community also make their home here, adding another layer of life to the neighbourhood. Explore lanes of colourful shops offering different services and find out why this area is truly uniquely Singaporean.

For a truly local experience, start the day with a classic breakfast of kaya bread, soft-boiled eggs and coffee brewed at Chin Mee Chin. Explore the Katong Antique House, a Peranakan home filled with antiques, heirlooms and reflecting the culture’s finery. Drop by any of the many restaurants along East Coast Road for lunch, tea or dinner and spend a leisurely day taking in the sights of the neighbourhood.

ACTIVITIES

Get a tailored Peranakan outfit (Nyonya Kebaya), take snapshots of vibrant shophouses along Koon Seng Road or sip on craft beer while people watching. An array of activities and sports await you at East Coast Park and Singapore Sports Hub. Cycling explore Singapore through the 42-km long Eastern Coastal Loop.

LOCAL EATS

Meals in the neighbourhood are always a delicious affair. Well-loved by locals, Nyonya cuisine (of the Peranakans) is a must-try with its savoury and spicy flavours. Along the lanes of Joo Chiat, discover classic confectioners offering puffs, pies and sweets. Laksa (rice noodles in a spicy coconut broth) still ranks as Katong’s most famous dish and seafood lovers can get their fix at East Coast Park with a strip of well-loved restaurants.

LOCAL AMENITIES

Shop for essentials at malls such as Parkway Parade, 112 Katong and One Katong Mall, all located within a 7-minute drive or taxi ride away. Fresh meat, seafood, fruits and vegetables are easily available at local food markets at Marine Parade, Haig Road and Geylang Serai.
